The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a national online register maintained by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA). It records security interests (such as finance or loans) over personal property, including vehicles.
Before you buy a used car, motorcycle, caravan, boat, or any other vehicle in Australia, a PPSR check tells you whether anyone else has a financial interest in it. If the vehicle has an active security interest and the previous owner defaults on their loan, the lender can legally repossess the vehicle — even from you, the new buyer.
The PPSR replaced the old state-based REVS (Register of Encumbered Vehicles) system in 2012, creating a single national register for all of Australia.
Run a PPSR check now — instant results, official data.
Security interests and encumbrances registered against the vehicle. Shows if money is owed to a bank, finance company, or other lender.
Whether the vehicle has been reported as stolen to police. Buying a stolen vehicle means losing it with no compensation.
Statutory write-offs (irreparable) and repairable write-offs. Critical for understanding the true condition and value.
Current registration status, expiry date, and registered state. Verify the seller's claims match official records.
Outstanding manufacturer safety recalls that need to be addressed before the vehicle is safe to drive.
Make, model, year, engine, transmission, body type and more. Confirm the vehicle is what the seller claims.
If there is a registered security interest (money owing) on the PPSR when you buy, the lender may have the right to repossess the vehicle — even if you paid the seller in full. That is why Australian buyers run a finance owing check through PPSR before every private or dealer purchase.
A “clear” conversation with the seller is not evidence. Only a current PPSR search certificate dated close to settlement proves what was on the register at search time.
If a car is recorded as stolen, police can recover it and you can lose the vehicle and your payment. Use our stolen car check page to understand how PPSR fits alongside a purchase inspection.
Statutory write-offs cannot be re-registered nationally; repairable write-offs may carry value and insurance implications. A write-off check is part of every full PPSR search.
If you're searching for a "REVS check", you're actually looking for a PPSR check. The Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) was the old state-based system used in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, NT and ACT before 2012.
In January 2012, REVS was replaced by the national Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR). The PPSR provides the same protections as REVS, but covers all of Australia under a single system. Learn more in our detailed PPSR vs REVS comparison.
